Cannabis components, cannabinoids, terpenoids, and flavonoids. These parts of the cannabis plant are not only being studied but already showing up in the consumer market. In today’s show we’ll share the basic understanding of each, as well as the latest research.
Terpenes, also known as terpenoids are the largest and most diverse group of naturally occurring compounds. Based on the number of isoprene units they have, they are classified as mono, di, tri, tetra, and sesquiterpenes. They are mostly found in plants and form the major constituent of essential oils from plants. Among the natural products that provide medical benefits for an organism, terpenes play a major and variety of roles. The common plant sources of terpenes are tea, thyme, cannabis, Spanish sage, and citrus fruits (e.g., lemon, orange, mandarin). https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7120914/ (2019)
Flavonoids, a group of natural substances with variable phenolic structures, are found in fruits, vegetables, grains, bark, roots, stems, flowers, tea and wine. These natural products are well known for their beneficial effects on health and efforts are being made to isolate the ingredients so called flavonoids. Flavonoids are now considered as an indispensable component in a variety of nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, medicinal and cosmetic applications. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5465813/ (2016)
